If your Seiko TP-5 displays error E-38, it means the print head is not able to move freely along its guide shaft.  This error may occur when inserting a time card or document, or powering up the Seiko TP-5.

Debris or foreign material in the time card slot can prevent the print head from moving and/or the print sensor from operating correctly.

The Seiko TP-5 should be in a clean environment.  Error E-38 will result if excessive dust or other pollutants settle on the guide shaft and prevent the print head moving.

Error E-38 can also occur if the ribbon cartridge is twisted, seized or is not seated correctly.  A twisted or seized ribbon cartridge will need replacing.  It must be replaced with Seiko part number TP-1051N.

To correct the problem:

  1. Remove and reinsert the ribbon cartridge to ensure it is properly seated.  Replace the ribbon cartridge, if necessary.
  2. Verify there is no debris or foreign material in the time card slot.
  3. Verify nothing is blocking the print head from moving.
  4. Verify the Seiko TP-5's environment does not have excessive dust or other pollutants.

If the problem persists, the TP-5 must be repaired or replaced.
